Damian was a bit taken aback by how big and bright and blue Ariana’s eyes were, “Uh,” he felt as if he was intruding and blushed feverishly, clearing his throat and looking down at the book, “Performing it, really. That’s the. The main thing. Wand part too.”

As Ari looked up, she found herself gazing back at a pair of kind eyes. The exchange caused Damian to blush and Ariana to laugh nervously, “Wand as it how to move the wand? Well, for performing it…confidence is key I’ve found. You have to remember I know this spell, i want to perform this spell. You have to feel it.” She replied, then looked down at the book again.

Damian took her words to heart and nodded, “Yeah… Confidence…” Great, something I’ve nothing of… He frowned slightly and looked back down at the book, “Okay…” he nodded again, closing his eyes, “I’ll practice it in my dormitory tonight, when Xeno’s asleep or something,”

“Seriously?” Ariana looked at him disbelievingly, “Call me stereotypical but I didn’t think Ravenclaw were rubbish at any subject.” She scooched closer and opened the book, “What do you need help with?”

“Well,” he started, clearing his throat, “I’m just not great at Charms— rubbish, really, it’s a curse.” Damian grinned at her and then looked down to the book, pointing at the page, “Just. I guess the whole non-verbal aspect of it… That and we’re learning…” He trailed off, “Learning stuff I can’t remember right now.” A nervous laugh.

Ariana hummed at she looked through the book, “well, is it performing the Charms, memorizing the Charms?” She flipped further, “The wand aspect of it?” She pushed her hair behind her ears and looked up at him from the book.

“I did miss you Damian. I and do care about you, but I just can’t love you. Not in that way. I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.” Mary told him in a broken sort of voice. “I’m sorry, I’m sorry” she repeated over and over.

Damian shrugged, “You know what? Fine.” The lump in his throat was unimaginably large, he could’ve sworn it was visible from space. “I guess. I mean. Better than being strung along,” He shifted and turned so that his side was facing her and that he was staring out over the lake. Damian’s head hung once again, and he stared at the ground. Not fair… His eyes began to well up and he blinked away tears, why would he cry? He wouldn’t. No. He kicked at the flowers that he’d dropped on the ground, moving them away and grumbling, stuffing his hands deep into his pockets.

Mary shook her head “No, no one in New York. It hasn’t been long… I realized it over the summer, and I’ve just been trying to work up the courage to tell you. Because you’re right. We have fun and we’re great together and you’re amazing and it’s all my fault and I’m sorry but I can’t change how I feel. I’ve tried. So so hard. But I just can’t.” she still refused to look at him hiding her face as tears rolled down her cheeks. “I’m sorry, Damian.” she whispered

“S-so… We’re done?” He peeked up at her for less than a second and looked back down, because— shit, it just hurt. “You’re just dropping me after a summer of me missing you and you supposedly missing me, after the events of last year, after I was tortured and imperiused— after having fun, or I guess pretending…” He sighed, he was crossing the line. Damian took a deep breath, “You’re not telling me everything, Mary…” He let the flowers drop to the floor because if he held them any longer, they’d burst into flames.

Every word he spoke was breaking her heart more and more. Why did he have to be so perfect, and wonderful? She stared at the flowers in his hands but couldn’t bring herself to take them. Mary refused to meet his eyes, “Damian.” she said quietly but he kept talking and then he kissed her and that almost broke her. “Damian stop.” she said a little louder because she had a horrible gut-wrenching feeling where this was going and she had to stop him now before he said it or she would never be able to. “Damian, I’m sorry but this isn’t working.”

“You shouldn’t be so sad— wait, what?” Damian cocked his head to the side and furrowed his eyebrows together, dropping his hand to the side and gripping the flowers very tightly. “Mary, what do you mean? I don’t…” He trailed off, shaking his head, “Did… Did I do something wrong? But. But Mary, I didn’t… But I love you.” He said, voice strained with sadness and disbelief— he was sure he looked completely pathetic.

Mary shook her head rapidly. “No. No, of course not. No, Damian you’re perfect. You’re everything I should want. You absolutely perfect but I just can’t be that girl you need. I can’t love you. I want to. So much. But I can’t and I’m sorry, you have no idea how sorry I truly am.” she told him trying very hear to keep her voice from breaking.

“B-but…” His head hung low and he stared at the ground. “But… We’ve been a couple for a long time and we have fun and I love you and why…” He looked up, head tilted off to the side, “Why, though? Is there… Why?” The last word sounded strangled— even to him. “And for… You’ve felt this way for how long? Is there… Was there someone in New York or… Something? What… Why, Mary? This isn’t… It’s not fair.” His hands were shaking and he simply kept his arms locked at his sides, he didn’t know what to do with them otherwise.
